You will recall my earlier article on our latest catch phrase in Kenya – “Chess Mashinani” which was done some time ago, see Chess Mashinani.
The story continues in the Mukuru area of Nairobi and we bring you a short report and photos by Erick Oyugi from Sports Outreach Institute.
We had wonderful time during our first ever Chess Tournament for schools in Mukuru! This was held on 30th July, 2016 at Redroof School from 9.00am to 6.00pm.
A total of 82 children participated and the schools included; Imara Daima SDA, Mwanzo Primary School, Mwangaza Primary School, Redroof, High View School, Vision, King Solomon, Ark of Peace and Elimu House.
At least 24 medals were awarded. All the players got certificates, two got T-shirts and 12 got some cash courtesy of Robert Katende.
The chief Arbiter James Mwangi, did a commendable job! There were no cash registration for the tournament and the players and coaches got their free meals.
The children played 5 rounds each in session one of the tournament. However, the top 12 players were later joined with 8 others from Elimu House for a five rounds 15 minutes Rapid Event.
Despite some challenges, the event was successful and we hope for a BIGGER one probably next year July.
