Peter Gilruth wins the 58th Nairobi Chess Club Championship
Peter Gilruth last weekend won the 58th Nairobi Chess Club Championship in fine style with a clean 6/6. The event was held at the Braeburn School, Gitanga Road, Nairobi and who were one of the sponsors of the event.
The annual Nairobi Chess Club Championship is one of Kenya’s most iconic and prestigious events. The event attracted a total of about 100 players which included a strong team from Uganda led by Haruna Nsubuga and Mathias Ssonko.
Peter Gilruth (2163) who won this event in 2012 was in fine form when he demolished two of the strongest Ugandans in the event Haruna Nsubuga (2112) and Mathias Ssonko (2113) on his way to victory.

Junior Section
The Junior section attracted a total of 14 players and included one from Tanzania and one from the England.
Sponsors
The event was sponsored by Braeburn School, Mrs Anju Paunrana, Mr Aslam Adam of the UK, Peter Gilruth, Mushfig Habilov and Vasanth Ramesh.
The total sponsorship raised was slightly over KES 70,000 (USD 700) and the top cash prize was KES 20,000 (USD 200).
Other stars
Mehul Gohil, Joseph Methu, Ricky Sang and Riya Shah also took part in the event as part of their final bit of training before they leave for the 2016 Baku Olympiad.
Ricky Sang and Joseph Methu were both pleased with their respectable 5/6 points to end up in joint 3rd position.
WFM Riya Shah who is the current Kenya National Champion had a respectable 4/6 points to end up in 26th position.
Mehul Gohil obtained 4/6 points and ended up in a disappointing 24th position.
This year’s attendance was lower than last years numbers due to the large contingent of Kenyan players who travelled to South Africa for the 2016 Africa Youth Chess Championship. Last year’s edition attracted over 140 players.
