Kenyan chess player CM Wachira Wachania yesterday evening landed safely in the USA on his way to the 3rd edition of Millionaire Chess which is being held in Atlantic City, USA from 6th to 10th October 2016.
CM Wachira Wachania was the winner of the Nairobi Edition of the Millionaire Chess Satellite event held at the Nairobi Gymkhana Club, Nairobi on 9th & 10th July 2016. You can read about that exciting event here – CM Wachira Wachania wins ticket to MC3.
The total cash prize fund for the MC3 is a staggering USD 300,000 which is approximately KES 30 million and a total of about 400 players have registered for this amazing event.
Adia Onyango a veteran chess player from the USA said on a Facebook post “It is not just a tournament…it is an experience”.
Top seed is Sam Shankland (2679) of USA followed by Adhiban Baskaran (2671) from India. The dark horse of this event in my opinion is 15 year old World Junior Champion Jeffrey Xiong (2647) of USA.
David Llada (David Llada) is the official photographer for this event and we can expect a feast of some great photos from him.
The only bit of depressing news is that this might be the last edition of this iconic event. You can read more about this on Maurice Ashley’s interview on Chessbase – Interview with GM Maurice Ashley.
Other Kenyans attending this event include IA Purity Maina who will be an arbiter and Chess Kenya Chairman Githinji Hinga.
