Dr Philip Mwashe crowned Qatar Red Crescent Chess Champion

Dr Philip Mwashe the long term patron of Mombasa Chess Club is the Qatar Red Crescent Chess Champion.

The Qatar Red Crescent Sports Festival was held in the month of March 2017 as an initiative of the management of the organization to honor the Qatar Sports Day which is observed every year on the second Tuesday of February.

The tournament was sponsored by the Qatar Red Crescent and the players all came from the staff of the organization where all departments were represented.

Among the games that were played was chess which had a field of 32 players in total. The players were from various nationalities: India, Philippines, Egypt, Sri Lanka, Jordan and of course Kenya.

The format of the chess tournament was a 1 game knockout with 5 minutes blitz in case of a draw.

The medical centers  in Doha were the designated playing centres.   The event had a wide contingent of staff from nurses, doctors, radiologists, pharmacists and adminstrative staff.

The final game was between Dr. Philip Mwashe of Kenya who resides in Qatar and Mr. Emran Mansang Mantolino from the Philippines.

The format to decide the winner was the best of 3 final games.  The winner of the final was to receive a check of 1,000 Qatar Riyals (about KES 28,000) so the stakes were high.

After 2 hard fought games Dr. Philip emerged the winner with 2 wins out of 3.

He now holds the prestigious title of Qatar Red Crescent Chess Champion.
