2017 Madaraka Open Rapid Chess Championship

A total of 177 payers (89 Open and 88 Juniors) participated in this year’s Madaraka Open Rapid Chess Championship that was held on 1st June (Open) and 3rd June (Juniors) at Spice Lounge which is located along General Mathenge Road in Westlands.

The Event which was organised by Nairobi Chess Academy & Club (NACHA) and partly sponsored by UCMAS Kenya.  According to NACHA CEO, FM Stephen Ouma, they intend to make it an annual event.

In the Open section, Brian Adorwa Kadenge who happens to play for NACHA in the Kenya National Chess League won the event after amassing 5.5 points out of possible 6. He was tied with Shafat Abdi Nasir Mohamed, but Adorwa won the blitz tie break which was used to split the tie.  Brian went home with a cash prize of KES 12,000 (USD 120) for his efforts.   Moses Andiwoh was third with 5 points.

In the Junior section, Brian Kariuki won the overall U18 category after scoring 6 points out of 6. He was closely followed by CM Aguda Lwanga who scored 5 points while 9 years old Reeyan Gosrani from Peponi Preparatory School finished 3rd .

Other players who had outstanding performance and won their respective categories were;

Jayden Fokuo: U12 boys

Elsie Mutitu: U12 girls

Sanjay Ramesh: U10 boys

Erica Mumbi: U10 girls

Ayana Kagondu: U8 girls
