Chess history was made on 26th August 2017 when Capital Centre along Mombasa Road hosted their first ever chess event.
The time control was 25 minutes in an event that saw just over 60 players compete in the Open, U8, U10, U12, and U16 sections.
Top players in this event included Peter Gilruth, Mehul Gohil and a number of ‘retired’ players like Clement Miheso and Nathan Ateka.
James Panchol cemented his reputation as the ‘Speed King’ when he won the event with a clean 6 points out of 7 games to go home with KES 6,000 (USD 60). In 2nd place was Nathan Ateka who got 5.5 points to earn KES 4,000. In joint 3rd place was Joseph Methu and Dr Kevins Omondi who shared KES 2,000 with 5 points each.
James Panchol recent victories include 2nd Utwala Chess Tournament in July 2017 (James Panchol wins Utwala Cup), Le Pelley Cup in January 2017 (James Panchol wins Le Pelley Cup) and the Rift Valley Chess Tournament in November 2016 (James Panhol wins Rift Valley Open).
