FM Patrick Kawuma put up an impressive performance when he outclassed a strong field in the just concluded Uganda Open. Patrick garnered a perfect score of 8 points out of 8 rounds to go home with the first prize of UGX 1.5 million (USD 410).
Cypriano Rehan Deng of South Sudan was second with 7 points. Uganda Chess Federation President Emmauel Mwaka was in joint third position with Solomon Lubega with 6.5 points each.
The top ranked Kenyan was James Panchol who managed to obtain an impressive 6 points.
Top ranked IM Arthur Ssegwanyi rated 2373 of Uganda managed to get 6 points to end up in joint 4th position but 7th on tie-break.
Second seed IM Elijah Emojong rated 2333 of Uganda ended up with 5.5 points and 9th on tie-break.
The real hero of the event was Cypriano Rehan Deng of South Sudan who is rated 1933 and who defeated the top two players IM Ssegwanyi and IM Emojong in round 4 and 8 respectively.
Shakira Ampaire won the Ladies prize with 5 points ahead of WFM Ivy Amoko who had 4.5 points.
The Open Section had a total of 86 players from 7 African federations.
In the U1600 section there was a 3 way tie between Jimmy Sserwadda, Johnson Mugyenyi and Huzaifa Junju. Jimmy was declared winner in this section on tie-break.
