GM Adly Ahmed wins 21st Bavarian Open

GM Adly Ahmed of Egypt put African Chess on the world map when he recently won the 21st edition of the Open International Bavarian Championship (OIBM).

GM Adly Ahmed is the 2005 Africa Junior Chess Champion and the 2007 World Junior Chess Champion.

The event which was held in Gut Kaltenbrunn in Gmund near Lake Tegernsee in Germany from 28th October to 5th November 2017.

The 9 round event had a time control of 90 minutes for the first 40 moves plus 30 minutes and 30 seconds from move 1.

The event had 487 players from 35 countries present.  A total of 23 Grandmasters, 28 International Masters and 40 FIDE Masters competed for a prize fund of Euro 16,300 (almost KES 2 million).  The top prize was Euro 3,000 (KES 360,000).

Entry fee for the event was Euro 90 per player (players born after 2000 paid Euro 50).
