Chess players in Uganda are looking forward to the Kireka Chess Open that starts on 28th December and runs to 31st December 2017.

IM Arthur Ssgewanyi is the defending champion having won the inaugural 2016 edition.  See story on 2016 Kireka Open.

Over 70 players have confirmed registration for the event.  IM Arthur Ssgewanyi, FM Patrick Kawuma & FM Harold Wanyama are some of the top players who have registered.

FM Patrick Kawuma is the player to watch.  He has been in scintillating form having won both the Uganda Open and the Rwabushenyi Memorial in a span of the past two months.  See Patrick Kawuma wins 2017 Uganda Open and Patrick Kawuma wins 2017 Rwabushenyi Memorial.

Emmanuel Mwaka (current UCF President) and Lubega Issa are founding members of Kireka Chess Club which was formed in the early 1990’s.  It is an active club with over 20 players and a team of able administrators.  Their website can be found here – Kireka Chess Club.

Bob Were is the current President and Morana Justin is the Patron.

Membership subscription is approximately USD 50 and then USD 30 per annum.
The club meets every evening at Nanfuka Pork opposite Eastern Route Hotel.
