FM Patrick Kawuma Wins Kawuma Open

FM Patrick Kawuma won the 4th edition of the family sponsored Kawuma Open which ran from 8th to 11th March 2018.  The venue for the event was the popular Forest Cottages, Naguru, close by to Kampala, Uganda.

The event was sponsored by the patriarch of the chess playing Kawuma family Professor Medi Kawuma.

FM Patrick Kawuma ended up undefeated with 7 out of 8 points.  Karim Faruk Fauza also ended up with 7 points but was placed 2nd on tie break.

The prize fund was a massive UGX 5.5 million (USD 1,600).

Two times winner of this event IM Emojong missed round 1 and then lost in two crucial games to FM Harold Wanyama and Mathias Ssonko in rounds 5 & 8 respectively.  As a result IM Elijah Emojong ended up in  joint 5th position with 5 points.

The event attracted a total of 72 players in the Open section while the U20 section attracted 34 players.  The winner of the U20 section was Resty Nalukwago who obtained 7 points out of 8.
