GM Abdeirahman Crowned Winner of 2018 Zone 4.2

GM Hesham wins Zone 4.2

GM Hesham Abdeirahman of Egypt powered his way to victory in the 2018 Zone 4.2 Individual Chess Championship last week.

GM Abdeirahman obtained 8 points of out 9 games.

The event was held in Djibouti from 11th to 16th June 2018 and was organised by the Djiboutian Chess Federation

WIM Ayah Moaataz of Egypt won the Ladies section with 5 points out of 5 games.

Zone 4.2 consists of the following 13  countries.

Burundi, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.

Kenya missed this year’s event due to poor communication from the organisers.

The Open section had 22 players from Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, Somalia and Uganda.  The Ladies section had only 6 players.

The event was opened by the President of AIDEF Mr Patrick Van Hoolandt.  AIDEF is an acronym for Association Internationale Des Echecs Francophones

2017 Zone 4.2 Event

Kenya had sent a team of six players for the 2017 edition in Jimma, Ethiopia.

Ricky Sang, Peter Gilruth, Gwen Jumba, Vasanth Ramesh, Sumit and Sanjana Deshpande were Kenya’s representatives.

WFM Sanjana Deshpane’s bronze medal in the 2017 edition was certainly the key highlight for Kenya.
