Details of the 60th Nairobi Chess Championship have now been released.
Nairobi Chess Club who are the organisers of the event are celebrating their 60 years of existence. The club was registered on 26th February 1958 making it one of the oldest clubs in the region.
This iconic Kenyan event has now seen 7 consecutive editions over the past years.
This year’s event will have 3 separate sections including Open, U1800 and U1600. The Open and U1800 will run over three days while the U1600 and will run over 2 days.
Sponsors of this event is made up exclusively of individual supporters of the game. These include Rodgers Adai, Aslam Adam, Terrian Chess Academy, Mehul Gohil, Peter Gilruth, James Kirimi, Benard Wanjala and Charles M Mugwanja.
The guaranteed prize fund is KES 61,000 (USD 600). The winner will go home with KES 15,000 (USD 150). Plans are still underway to increase the prize fund.
Moses Andiwoh the winner of the 2017 edition is yet to confirm his entry.
FM Haruna Nsubuga is expected to lead a contingent of strong Ugandan players to the event.
