Sasha Mongeli wins Star Times Award

Chess player Sasha Mongeli was crowned the Star Times sports personality for the month for October 2018.

The 21-year-old student at Technical University of Kenya attained the Women FIDE Master (WFM) title during the World Chess Olympiad held in Batumi, Georgia between 28th September to 6th  October 2018. It was her debut at the biennial event.

Sasha scored an impressive 8 points out of 9 games.

Sasha received a  42-inch digital television courtesy of Star Times as well as a KES 100,000 (USD 1,000) cheque and a trophy.

Francis Aduol who is TUK’s vice chancellor  also extended his congratulations to Sasha on her fine achievement.  TUK have over the years produced a strong string of chess players including Philip Singe, Lewis Issaboke and others.

The only other time chess got some kind of recognition was in the 2011 SOYA Awards.  Sharanya Iyengar who was 10 years old at the time was one of the nominees.  Sharanya Iyengar nominated for SOYA Awards.
