Kenya National Youth Chess Championship KNYCC 2019

KNYCC 2019 is major milestone in Kenyan chess history.

A record breaking 1,600 players are taking part in this event in Nyeri town. The event is being hosted by Bishop Gatimu Ngandu Girls and Ruthagati Boys.

The participants for this event were selected from the various regional qualifiers held earlier this year. Reports were done for most of the regional qualifiers which can be found in the links below.

The numbers are distributed as shown below:

Registered participants per category.

Under 8 Boys: 82.
Under 8 Girls: 56.
Under 10 Boys:150.
Under 10 Girls: 111.
Under 12 Boys: 167.
Under 12 Girls: 91.
Under 14 Boys: 123.
Under 14 girls :. 83.
Under 16 Boys: 163.
Under 16 Girls : 193.
Under 18 Boys : 183.
Under 18 Girls. : 122.

Total 1,524.

The numbers represent an approximate 50% increase from the numbers registered in 2018. This is attributed to increased awareness through the Chess in Schools programs. The program is led by Fred Sagwe with tremendous support from Kenya Academy of Sports.

The newly crowned National Champions will represent the country in various international events in the year.
