Abdi Miskin wins Karen Country Club Chess Championship
Abdi Miskin won his maiden chess tournament on ‘Madaraka Day‘ at the grand Karen Country Club. This was when he won the 2nd edition of the Karen Open Rapid Fire Chess Tournament.
‘Madaraka Day‘ is a Public Holiday in Kenya. It celebrates the day in 1963 that Kenya attained independent self-governance after decades of British rule.
Kenya’s top players were present in the 2nd edition of the event which was organised by Nairobi Chess Academy & Club. Joseph Methu, Mehul Gohil and Githinji Hinga were some of the top players who took part.
Eighteen players in total took part in the event which had a prize fund of KES 18,000 (USD 180).
Abdi Miskin took home the top prize of KES 8,000 (USD 80).

2. FM Stephen Ouma 6 points.
3. Mehul Gohil 5 points.
4. Joseph Methu 4.5 points.
Viraj Shah had 3 points and won the prize for best Junior Boy.
Nissi Kerandi had 3 points and won the prize for best Junior Girl.
Karen Country Club
Karen Country Club is a family oriented club, founded in 1937 and prides itself in being one of the oldest golf clubs in Kenya.
The Club has been host to the prestigious Barclays Kenya Open for the past three consecutive years.
Karen Blixen,who was a well known Danish pioneer, was the original owner of a large part of the golf course. The movie ‘Out of Africa‘ is about her life in Kenya.
