James Panchol wins Galleria Mall BYOB
James Panchol won the inaugural BYOB chess event at the magnificent Galleria Shopping Mall on 14th June 2019. He obtained 7.5 points out of 9 games. His prize was a KES 5,000 (USD 50) Galleria shopping voucher.
Martin Njoroge, Lenox Maingi, and Juma Maxwell were in joint second place with 7 points.
A total of 32 players took part in this blitz tournament. Galleria Mall now joins a growing number of shopping centres who are turning to board games to promote their malls.
Githinji Hinga, Ben Nguku, Ricky Sang were some of Kenya’s top players who took part in the event.
Village Market and Southfield Mall are some of the other shopping malls that have organised such events. Terrian Chess Academy has been crucial in the organisation of these events.
Ms Salma Cherono who is the Head of Communication & Marketing of Galleria was the force behind this initiative.
Galleria Shopping Mall
The mall sits on 12 acres in the plush Nairobi’s suburb of Karen. It is a vibrant modern shopping centre, dining and entertainment destination.
Some of the top shops include Carrefour, Bata, Text Book Centre, Woolworths, and Artcaffe, among others.
It has over 164,000 square feet on three floors. The mall was opened in 2010.
