Anthony Kionga shines at Tanzania Open

Anthony Kionga continued to punch above his weight at the 2019 Tanzania Open. He demolished FM Haruna Nsubuga of Uganda in their round 3 on the second day of the event.

Anthony Kionga had earlier in round 1 downed the well-known FM Harold Wanyama of Uganda. He has now truly earned his place in Kenyan chess history by defeating two of Uganda’s top players in one event.

FM Harold Wanyama and FM Haruna Nsubuga are rated 2293 and 2220 respectively.  Anthony Kionga on the other hand is rated at 1593.

Albert Njau of Tanzania defeated Kenya’s Ricky Sang in round 3. CM Ben Magana, in turn, defeated Albert Njau in round 4.

Albert Njau who is rated 1712 crushed FM Haruna Nsubuga in round 2.

FM Harold Wanyama after his painful loss in round 1 to Anthony Kionga seemed to have found his rhythm. He won both his games against Rashid Sharif and Willian Kilomwe in in day 2.

Anthony Kionga at end of day 2 was in 15th place with 2 valuable points from his Ugandan victims.

CM Ben Magana, Ben Nguku and Joseph Methu each have 4 points at the top of the ranking.

CM Ben Magana will play FM Harold Wanyama in round 5. Joseph Mehtu takes on Ben Nguku as well in round 5.
