2019 Kenya National Chess Championship Day 4

Day 4 of the 2019 Kenya National Chess Championship was another exciting day with high tension drama.

Open Section

Round 7

Joseph Methu suffered another rare defeat when he lost to Mehul Gohil on the top board.

Rodgers Adai lost to Ben Nguku on board 2.

Jackson Kamau defeated former Kenya National Champion Lawrence Kagambi.

Defending Champion Dr Victor Ng’ani managed to overcome Milton Kihara on board 7.

Round 8

Mehul Gohil managed to defeat Jackson Ndegwa on board 1.

Ben Nguku dismissed youngster Martin Njoroge on board 3.

Kenya’s top-ranked player Joseph Methu was held to a draw by Ricky Sang.

Dr Victor Ng’ani defeated upcoming player Trevor Mulindi on board 5.

Martin Njoroge versus Ben Nguku

Final Round 9

The results now means Mehul Gohil who has 22 points and leading will now face Ben Nguku who has 21 points. Whoever wins this mouth-watering clash will win the top prize of a Mazda car!

Defending champion Dr Ng’ani will face the formidable Githinji Hinga on board 2. Both have 19 points, and a win for any of them will have a significant impact on the final standings.

CM Ben Magana will face Nathan Ateka on board 3. Both have 18 points.

Jackson Kamau, who has 18 points, will have to deal with team-mate Ricky Sang who has 17 points on board 4.

Joseph Methu, who has 17 points, will face Lawrence Kagambi who has 18 points on board 5.

Ladies Section

WFM Sasha Mongeli will face WCM Lucy Wanjiru on board 1 in the final encounter. Both have 19 points.

Easter Awnija who had an excellent start will face Julie Mutisya on board 2.
