Mehul Gohil wins 2019 Bungoma Open

Mehul Gohil kept a cool head when he cruised to victory at the 2019 Bungoma Open last weekend. He obtained an impressive 5.5 points out of 6 rounds to emerge clear winner and take home KES 25,000 (USD 250).

The 4th edition of this event attracted a total of 34 players from Nairobi and the surrounding region.  The cash prize fund was pegged at a modest KES 68,000 (USD 680).

FM Steve Ouma who plays for Equity Bank Chess Club in the Kenya National League was 2nd with 5 points. He took home KES 15,000.

James Panchol, Steve Okeyo and Matthew Kanegeni were in joint third place with 4.5 points each. They shared the 3rd, 4th & 5th prize which amounted to KES 18,000 equally.

The Bungoma Tourist Hotel was the selected venue for this 6 round event which had a time control of 90 minutes.

Junior Section

A total of 13 junior players took part in the Junior Section.

Prince Isaac Munyua & Reagan Nyongesa were joint winners with 5 points each.  However Prince Isaac Munyua had a better tie-break.

Victor Kibunja and Tyler Destiny Emoit were joint second with 4 points each.
