Uganda wins Zone 4.4 U16 Team Chess Championship

Uganda was the proud winner of the Zone 4.4 U16 Team Chess Championship which took place in Nairobi.

The event ran from 6th to 10th December 2019 at the Luke Hotel, Nairobi and saw a total of 12 teams from 4 federations.

Kenya had nine teams which Tanzania, Uganda and South Sudan has one side each.

Uganda was sure of the gold medal as they had remained unbeaten for the first five rounds. Tanzania caused a major upset in round 6 when they crushed Uganda 3-1.

It gave Team Kenya Stormy Knights a slim chance to become the winners if Uganda lost to South Sudan in the final round.

However, Uganda managed to defeat South Sudan, which only had three players.

Uganda will receive a travel grant to participate in the World Youth U16 Chess Olympiad 2020.
