IM Arthur Ssegwanyi wins the 4th Kireka Open

IM Arthur Ssegwanyi won the 4th edition of the hotly contested Kireka Open Chess Tournament in Kampala, Uganda.

He was undefeated in the event and scored 7.5 points out of 8 rounds. He drew against FM Patrick Kawuma who also ended up with 7.5 points but had a lower tie-break.

Arthur and Patrick equally shared the first two top cash prizes of UGX 1,000,000 plus UGX 700,000. The total prize fund of the event was UGX 3,950,000 (USD 1,000).

The Open section had just over 140 players while the Junior section had a total of 68 players taking part. The event was held at Sports View Hotel from 27th to 30th December 2019.

Kireka Chess Club were the organisers of this prestigious event.

IM Arthur Ssegwanyi  won the 2019 Rwabushenyi Open in early December 2019.  He is currently Uganda’s highest-rated player with a FIDE rating of 2366.

FM Harold Wanyama and IM Elijah Emojong who are ranked second and fourth respectively in Uganda did not take part.

The event had players from Afghanistan, South Sudan, Nigeria, and Kenya. James Luala, Anthony Kionga, Cherly Ngima were the Kenyans who took part in the event.
