Madelta Glenda maintains her lead at World Championship
Madelta Glenda yesterday afternoon defeated Kazakhstan’s Daniya Suerkulova in round 8 to maintain her lead into the final round of the 2021 World Amateur Chess Championship. She now has 6.5 points while compatriot WCM Joyce Ndirangu has 6 points.
Madelata Glenda will face her sternest test this afternoon when she takes on Mozah Al-Moaamari from United Arab Emirates in the last and final round.
A win for Medelta Glenda will earn her a well deserved gold medal, and a draw could hand her a gold medal or silver depending on what happens on board two.
Kenyan chess fans following the game from round 8 were devastated when Madelta played Rd2 on move number 26, which allowed her young opponent to win a free Knight. Madelta clung on by putting up a stiff fight before her opponent blundered on move 69.

WCM Joyce Ndirangu
WCM Joyce Ndirangu, on the other hand, was clinical in her victory, which came on move 42. WCM Ndirangu is now lying second with 6 points and will face WCM Zainab Darwish Almaamari of United Arab Emirates, who has 5 points. A win for Joyce could see her grab a potential gold medal if her compatriot Madelta Glenda loses her game on board one.
WCM Joyce Ndirangu v Katholiki Troumouchi
WCM Lucy Wanjiru also won her game and now has 4.5 points and will take on Katholiki Troumouchi of Greece.
