CM Charles Eichab & WFM Shipindo crowned Namibian Champions

CM Charles Eichab won the 2022 Namibian Chess Championship that ended last weekend in Windhoek.

He won the event with 7.5 points out of 8 rounds, 2.5 points ahead of his nearest rival!

Jossy Uapingene and Goodwill Khoa were a distance second place with 5 points each.  Jossy Uapingene had a better tie break and was declared the runner-up, while Goodwill Khoa took third place.

CM Charles Eichab has won the Namibian Championship a record eight times in the past two decades! For this reason, fans call him the ‘Lion of Namibia’!

WFM Rauha Shipindo was declared the winner of the Ladies Section of the same event. She won the event with 8 points out of 9 rounds with six wins and two draws.

WCM Jolly-Joice Nepando was runners up with 6.5 points.

WCM Jamie-Nicole Beukes was third with 6 points.  She is the younger sister of IM Dante Beukes.

The 2021 Namibian Ladies Champion WCM Lishen Mentile found the going tough and ended with only 6 points and 6th in the ranking, hence missing the Olympiad slot.

Olympiad Team

In the Open section, the top 4 players will make the Olympiad team. They include CM Charles Eichab, Jossy Uapingene, NM Goodwill Khoa, and Heskiel Ndahangwapo. IM Dante Beukes, who is currently studying in the USA, will be the 5th player.

In the Ladies section, the top 5 players will make the Olympiad team. They include WFM Rauha Mulisa, WCM Jolly-Joice Nepando, WCM Jamie-Nicole Beukes, Keisha-Cathriona Van Wyk and Patience Tsuses .

Event sponsors

The event’s sponsors included Windhoek Show Society, Kingdom Way Chess Academy, Maximum Chess Academy, and Mothlaping Investments. Other individuals sponsors for the Women’s section cash prizes included NM Max Nitzborn, NM Goodwill Khoa, Mrs P. Becker and Mr G. Itembu.   

The event ran from 17th to 21st March 2022 at the spacious Wag’ n Bietjie hall at the Windhoek Show Grounds

The B-Section section

Gregory Kazekondjo (7.5 points) was the winner of the B Section (Open). His victory guarantees him a place in the 2023 Namibia National Championship.  

WCM Nicola Tjaronda (5.5 points) was the winner of the B Section (Ladies) and gained automatic entry into the 2023 Namibian Chess Championship Women’s Section
