Rajab Kamoga wins 2022 Uganda Open Chess Tournament

Rajab Kamoga won the 2022 Uganda Open Chess Tournament that ended last week at the Mackinnon All Suites in downtown Kampala. He obtained 7.5 points out of 8 rounds to go home with a cash prize of UGX 1,300,000 (USD 360).

Chaderek Manyok of South Sudan, Emmanuel Egesa of Uganda and Deng Kuai Ayom of South Sudan tied in joint 2nd place with 6.5 points each.

Interestingly, both the South Sudanese players Chaderek Manyok and Deng Kuai Ayom were unrated at the start of the tournament.

The event saw just under 100 players taking part in the third edition of this prestigious event. The total prize fund was a modest UGX 7,650,000 (USD 2,000) spread out in the Open, Ladies, Veterans, and Blitz section of the event.

Rajab Kamoga had two interesting miniatures from the event.

WCM Shakira Ampaire of Uganda was the top lady player with an impressive 6 points from 8 rounds.

Only two Kenyans were featured in the event this year.

Youngster Yvonne Mwashe got 3 points. Brian Irungu obtained a respectable score of 5.5 points to end up in joint 4th or 12th in the overall ranking. Kenyans on social media were excited when Brian Irungu defeated one of Uganda’s top players Michael Mawanda in round 5.

The event had players from Somalia, Scotland, South Sudan and Kenya.

Planning & Development Meeting

The Uganda Chess Federation hosted the Planning & Development meeting alongside the event. Arkady Dvorkovich, the FIDE President, and other FIDE delegates with African Federation Presidents were in attendance at the meeting.

The Uganda Chess Federation celebrates its Golden Jubilee this year.
