Peter Majur Manyang wins Uganda Martyr Championship

Peter Majur Manyang of South Sudan won the 2022 Uganda Martyr Championship, which ran from 3rd to 5th June 2022 at the Kiwatule Recreational Centre in downtown Kampala. He scored 5.5 points out of six rounds to go home with UGX 500,000 (USD 150).

Six players tied for joint second place with 5 points each. These included Emmanuel Egesa, Gong Thon Gong, Rajab Kamoga, FM Haruna Nsubuga, Simon Gonza and Ivan Mugisha.

The highest-ranked player in the event, IM Elijah Emojong, scored 4.5 points to end up in joint third place and 8th in the ranking.

The hotly contested event saw just over 60 players participating in the six-round event with a time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds.

Three players from South Sudan and one from Somalia added an international flavour to the event. Kenya, unfortunately, was not represented.

Patrick Ojok and FM Harold Wanyama sponsored the event with a modest cash prize of UGX 1.825 million or (USD 500).

Martyr’s Day

Martyrs’ Day is a national public holiday in Uganda on June 3rd. The day commemorates the 45 Catholic and Anglican martyrs, who were killed on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga II, then King of Buganda, between 1885 and 1887.
