2022 African Junior Chess Championship
The 2022 African Junior Chess Championship is underway in the Algeria port city of Bejaia.
IM Lamine Brahami of Algeria, the defending Champion, is in the lead with 5.5 points at the end of round seven. Jan Karsen of South Africa is second with 5 points.
Robert Oluka Mcligeyo of Kenya was lying in third place with 4.5 points. Joining him with the same number of points includes Tarik Hallal of Algeria and Mauritanian National Champion CM Mohamed Taleb Abderrahim.
Robert Oluka Mcligeyo will now face the 15-year-old CM Mohamed Taleb Abderrahim, Mauritania’s top-ranked player.
The Open Section has 16 players from eight African federations.
The event’s start was marred by the delayed arrival of the Angolan team, who missed two crucial rounds.
At the end of the 7th round, the Angolan pair of CM Amaro Lutuma and FM Junior Domingos were lying in joint 5th place with 3.5 points.
Ladies Section
WIM Lina Nassr of Algeria, the defending Champion, is leading with 6.5 points out of seven rounds. WFM Junior Ednasia of Angola and Chahrazed Djerround of Algeria are in second place with 5.5 points.
Mercy Ingado is facing her baptism by fire and has two points out of seven rounds in this challenging event with 12 players from four African federations.
Playing schedule
The event schedule is tough on players, with two days having double rounds and no rest day.
Round eight will take place on 18th November, with the final 9th round a day later.
