IM Ssegwanyi wins 6th Kireka Open Chess Championship
IM Arthur Ssegwanyi carved his name into the Ugandan history books when he won the Kireka Open Chess Championship for the third consecutive time in a row! His win in the 6th edition means he has now won four of the six editions of this prestigious Ugandan event. He went home with UGX 1.3 million (USD 350).
CM Emmanuel Egesa, Peter Majur Manyang, Joseph Deng Riak and FM Haruna Nsubuga were joint second with 6.5 points each.
Peninah Nakabo, the 2018 Africa Amateur Individual Chess Champion, was the top lady player with six points and 13th in the ranking. It is interesting to note that she is the wife of Uganda’s top player IM Ssegwanyi.
IM Elijah Emojong found the going tough and scored five points in this eight-round contest.
From 28th to 31st December 2022, the event saw about 140 participants battling it at the Gloria Gardens Namugongo, Kampala. Six federations were present and included Afghanistan, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Kenya and host Uganda.
Yvonne Mwashe was the sole Kenyan representative, and she scored four points.
The Kireka Open Chess Championship is the second event in the Grand Prix series to select the Ugandan team for the 2023 African Games.
