2022 Kenya Team Selection – Final Phase
The 11-round-robin tournament saw twelve participants battling it out for the five coveted slots for the 2023 African Games due to be held in Accra, Ghana, later this year.
The 2022 Kenya National Chess Champion, Mehul Gohil, failed to make it into the team when he scored only 4 points to end up in 7th in the ranking. Losses to Robert Mcligeyo, Elvis Likoko, CM Ben Magana, Dr Victor Ng’ani and to Jackson Kamau saw his hopes dashed.
Other big names that failed to make the team included 2021 Kenya National Champion Martin Njoroge and veterans Ricky Sang and Jackson Kamau.
Elvis Likoko scored six points to make his maiden appearance on the team.
Robert Mcligeyo won the event with an impressive 8.5 points propelling his FIDE rating to 2027 and making him Kenya’s top-rated player with CM Ben Magana.
The line up of the Open Team
CM Ben Magana – Head Coach.
Everything was predictable in the Ladies’ Section, with the same 2022 team making it into the 2023 team!
Twelve-year-old Elizabeth Cassidy Maina deserves a special mention. She defeated Madelta Glenda, the World Amateur U1700 Champion in their round four encounter. Elizabeth finally scored six points to grab sixth place, narrowly missing a slot in the team.
Moses Andiwoh – Ladies Coach.
