Gilruth wins 12th Capablanca Cup
Peter Gilruth has clinched the 12th Capablanca Cup with a score of 3 points out of four rounds. He beat a strong field of 18 players participating in the event’s Open Section.
Hugh Misiko, CM Lwanga Aguda, Gabriel Njuki, and Collins Young also obtained 3 points to equally share the cash prize of KES 30,000 with Peter Gilruth. Hugh Misiko took home the runners-up trophy as he had a superior tie-break.
Peter Gilruth is now the only player who has won this prestigious event twice (2015 and 2023). He is currently ranked 5th in Kenya in the FIDE rating.
U1600 Section
The U1600 Section saw 32 players battling it out for the top prize of KES 10,000 and a glittering trophy. In the end, Zaddock Nyakundi prevailed and won this Section with a score of 5.5 points out of six rounds.
Stanley Omondi was second with five points.
U1400 Section
Sarthak Patnaik, on the other hand, smashed his way through the U1400 Section to win with a perfect score of 6 points out of 6 rounds to go home with a prestigious trophy.
Samuel Murage, Harry Bariu Ngalu, Shakira Shukri and Shubh Shah all tied for second place with five points each. However, Samuel Murage took home the runner-up trophy as he had a better tie-break.
A total of 64 players took part in this event.

The German School, Nairobi, hosted the event over the weekend of 21st and 22nd January 2023. Nairobi Chess Club was the event organiser, while Dr Mujahid Din was the sponsor in honour of his late father, Younis Din who was a keen chess player.
