IM Mariano Amarelle wins 2023 Zone 4.2 Chess Championship

IM Mariano Amarelle of Cape Verde retained his title with a perfect score of 9 points out of nine rounds at the Zone 4.2 Individual Chess Championship that ended on 31st March 2023 in Dimbokro, Ivory Coast. He took home USD 1,200 as the top prize, plus the gold medal.

It was interesting to note that IM Amarelle fought to grab a win against James Tondo of Liberia in the 9th and final round, even though he had won the event with a round to spare.

FM Abdulrahman Abdulraheem of Nigeria claimed the silver medal with seven points and took home USD 700.

Nicolas Cogan did well to score 6.5 points and took home a bronze medal plus USD 750 for the host nation.

Thirty players from eight federations took part in the event. These included Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, Niger, Togo and host Ivory Coast.

Ladies’ Section

Maud Benson of Ghana won the Ladies’ Section with 7.5 points from nine rounds and received USD 500 plus the gold medal.

Karyah Abigail, the 15-year-old star from Liberia and Nadezhda Marochkina of Senegal settled to settle for silver and bronze medals, respectively.

The Ladies’ Section had twelve players from seven federations.

The event ran from 24th March 24 to 1st April 2023.
