WIM Anika Du Plessis & Heskiel Ndahangwapo win 2023 RMB Namibia Open
WIM Anika Du Plessis of South Africa won the Ladies Section of the 2023 RMB Namibia Open with six points out of seven rounds. On the other hand, Heskiel Ndahangwapo of Namibia won the Open Section with the same score of six points out of seven rounds.
In the Ladies’ Section, WFM Rauha Mulisa won the silver medal with 5.5 points, while Lutopu Khoa won the bronze with the same number of points but a lower tie-break. The Ladies’ Section of the event saw 23 participants battling it out.
Twenty-three-year-old WIM Anika Du Plessis is one of the top players from South Africa, having won the Ladies Section of the 2019 African Junior Chess Championship held in Kampala, Uganda.
In the Open Section, Simon Bokamoso of Botswana won the silver medal with six points but with a lower tie-break than Heskiel Ndahangwapo. Evans Chitula of Zambia grabbed the bronze medal with 5.5 points. The Open Section had 50 players taking part.
Top seed IM Dante Beukes found the going tough and only managed to get 5 points. He suffered two painful losses to CM McLean Handjaba in round 4 and to eventual winner and 2023 Namibia National Champion Heskiel Ndahangwapo in round 6.
The event, which ran from the 25th to the 28th of May, 2023, was held at the Nictus Cultural Centre, located in the capital city of Windhoek.
