2023 Kenya Schools Chess Championship

The 2023 Kenya Schools Chess Championship, which featured just over 2,200 participants, ended last weekend. The event ran from 10th to 14th August at Wellspring Schools, Gilgil, within Nakuru County.

Over 350 schools took part, representing a significant stride in Kenya’s chess movement.

The event with separate age groupings from U7, U9, U11, U13, U15, and U17 had eight rounds with different categories for boys and girls.

Initially, the event had a bumpy start due to severe logistical challenges, but everything worked out at the end of day one.

St. Patrick’s Iten High School won 92 points in the Secondary Schools category, while St. Monica’s Grils High School was second with 83 points.

In the Primary Schools category, KBA School was tops with 95 points, while Makini School was second with 69 points.

The top schools will be able to represent Kenya at the 2024 World Schools Chess Championship.
