FM Patrick Kawuma wins 2023 Uganda Open
FM Patrick Kawuma was the proud winner of the 2023 Uganda Open that ended last weekend at the Nob-View Hotel in downtown Kampala.
He amassed an impressive 7.5 points out of 8 rounds to go home with UGX 1.5 million (USD 400) out of the total prize fund of UGX 6.75 million (USD 1,800).
Five players tied in joint second place with 6.5 points. These included FM Harold Wanyama, Norman Magino, Gong Thon Gong, CM Emmanuel Egesa and Abdul Shakuru Wagodo. However, FM Harold Wanyama took the silver, and Norman Magino took the bronze based on their superior tie-breaks.
Milly Takali was the top lady player with an impressive 6 points out of 8 rounds.
The event saw just over 150 enthusiasts participating in the Open Section and 100 in the Junior Section.
Daniel Odokonyero won the Junior Section with 7.5 points out of nine rounds.
Kenyan players
Michael Kiggs was the top Kenyan with 4.5 points to end up 56th in the ranking. Eight-year-old Nathaniel Manyeki, the 2023 African Youth Chess Champion U8, performed splendidly to end with 4 points and gained 47 Elo points in the event!
Grand Prix
The Open Section of the 2023 Uganda Open served as the 2nd leg of the Grand Prix Circuit for the 2024 Olympiad Qualifiers and the 2024 Africa Games Qualifiers.
