Peter Majur Manyang wins 2023 Mombasa Open

Peter Majur Manyang of South Sudan won the 2023 Mombasa Open with a score of 5.5 points out of six rounds. He went home with KES 40,000 (USD 350).  

Martin Njoroge, the 2021 Kenya National Champion, performed well to score 5.5 points but had a lower tie-break to end up as joint winner but took the silver medal.

James Panchol, Joseph Methu, and Philip Singe tied for third place with 5 points each. However, James Panchol took the bronze due to his superior tie-break.

Defending Champion Mehul Gohil found the going tough and ended up with only 4.5 points and 8th in the ranking. A painful loss in round one to Edwin Koech and a draw in the final 6th round again ACM Ezekiel Masiko of Uganda saw his hopes dashed.

The Ugandans found the going tough in this year’s Mombasa Open. FM Harold Wanyama was the top Ugandan with 4.5 points to end up 7th in the ranking.

Peter Majur Manyang represented South Sudan in the 2022 Chess Olympiad held in Chennai, India, scoring an impressive 6 points out of 9 rounds.

In the following game, Peter Majur Manyang plays aggressively to crush compatriot James Panchol, who resides in Kenya.

This section saw just over 90 players taking part. Some federations represented included England, South Sudan, Uganda, Zambia, Tanzania and host Kenya.

The six-round event ran from 20th to 22nd October 2023 at the Mombasa Beach Hotel, Mombasa. The time control for the six-round event was 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move.

Ladies Section

WCM Joyce Nyaruai confirmed her status as East Africa’s top lady player by winning this section with 5.5 points out of six rounds. She took home KES 20,000.

WFM Sasha Mongeli and Concillia Ndegwa Awour tied for second place with 5 points each. However, WFM Sasha Mongeli took the silver as she had a superior tie-break.

This section had 38 participants, including four Ugandans.
