FM Joseph Mwale wins 2023 Malawi Open
FM Joseph Mwale won the 2023 Malawi Open Chess Championship, scoring 7.5 points out of nine rounds. He went home with MWK one million (USD 600) for his efforts.
The defending champion, CM George Mwale, was second with seven points and went away with MKW 550,000 (USD 350). It is interesting to note that Joseph Mwale is the younger brother of CM George Mwale.
The Open Section had 42 participants, and the time control was 90 minutes to complete the game.
In the Lady’s Section, the Mozambican trio of Neusa Castro, Malenda Ana Da Tanner & Sheila Sitole grabbed all the podium places!
Neusa Castro won the Lady’s Section with 8.5 points out of nine rounds. She went home with MKW 400,000 (USD 250).
Malenda Ana Da Tanner took the silver medal with 6.5 points, and Sheila Sitole took the bronze with six points.
The Lady’s Section saw 16 players taking part.
Event details
The Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre was the event venue with a total prize fund of MKW 3.3 million (USD 2,000), with the Open Section having MWK 2.5 million and the Lady’s Section having MWK 900. The event ran from 17th to 20th December 2023.
