Mehul Gohil wins 2023 Bungoma Open

Mehul Gohil was crowned the 2023 Bungoma Open Champion after he scored a perfect six points out of six rounds. He was the defending champion, having won the last edition in 2019, and he took home KES 30,000 (USD 250) for his efforts.

Mehul’s victory came a week after winning the 2023 Muranga Open Chess Championship title.

Joseph Methu was second with 5.5 points, while James Panchol and Brian Irungu ended up in third place with five points each. However, James Panchol took the bronze due to a higher tie-break.

The six-round event with a time control of 90 minutes ran from the 9th to 10th December 2023 at the plush Bungoma Royal Suites Hotel.

Fifty-four players battled in the Open Section, while the Junior Section had 45 players.
