Mehul Gohil wins 2023 Muranga Open

Mehul Gohil clinched his first 2023 event in the inaugural Muranga Open over the weekend of 25th & 26th November 2023 at the Stanley Haven Hotel in downtown Muranga. He scored a perfect six points in the event, which had a gruelling 90-minute time control over six rounds in two days.

The event saw 57 participants in the Open Section and another 55 players in the two Junior sections (u6-12 & U12-18).

Mehul Gohil went home with a cash prize of KES 30,000.

Joseph Methu, Dr Victor Ng’ani and Christian Nderi tied for second place with 5 points each and shared a total of KES 40,000.

Renowned Kenyan arbiter Anthony Kionga returned to tournament play with a stunning victory against 2018 Kenya National Champion Dr Victor Ng’ani in round three.  Anthony Kionga ended with a respectable four points to end up 10th in the ranking.

Interestingly, this was the second edition of the Muranga Open, with  Ben Nguku winning the first edition. The event organisers can be proud that the 2022 Kenya National Champion Mehul Gohil won this year’s edition.

Caroline Wambui and Samson Airathe were the event directors, with Moses Maina as the Chief Arbiter.
