The 2024 Kenya Chess Olympiad Qualifiers

The 2024 Kenya Chess Olympiad Qualifiers was an exciting affair that ended on 18th February 2024 at The Utali Hotel in Kasarani, Nairobi.

Robert Mcligeyo, Martin Njoroge, Matthew Kanegeni, Ian Mutuge and Elvis Likoko qualified in the Open Section.

Interestingly, the team is infused with young talent this time, with Matthew Kanegeni as the only senior player. Young stars Ian Mutuge and Elvis Likoko will debut at the Olympiad, symbolising a hopeful future for Kenyan chess.

It was a moment of disappointment for 2023 Kenya National Champion Joseph Methu, who just missed the cut by finishing 6th in the ranking.

2022 Kenya National Champion Mehul Gohil found the going difficult and ended up 10th in the final listing.

Both Nicole Albright and Mercy Igado will be making their debut appearance in the Ladies Section.

The 11-round Round Robin event ran from the 9th to the 18th of February, 2024.

The 45th Olympiad, eagerly awaited by chess enthusiasts worldwide, will take place in Budapest, Hungary, from 10th to 23rd September 2024.
