2024 African Amateurs Individual Chess Championships 

The 2024 African Amateurs Individual Chess Championships kicked off in Hotel Source du Nil in Bujumbura, Burundi’s capital.

Fifty-two players from nine African federations will participate in the event from July 21st to July 29th, 2024.

The top-rated player is FM Haruna Nsubuga of Uganda, the winner of the 2022 edition.

Team Kenya

Team Kenya has six men and three ladies taking part.

The Open Section has CM Ben Magana, Robert Oluka McligeyoJoseph Muragu MethuJackson Kamau Ndegwa, Ricky SangChrisphinus Wanjiru.

The Ladies Section will see Joyce Nyaruai NdiranguElizabeth Cassidy MainaJumba Gloria in action.

Joseph Methu, the 2023 Kenya National Champion, will lead the team in defending the medals won in the last edition.  

KCB Bank is the team’s sponsor, underlying their strong commitment to Kenyan Chess.  The KCB Bank is a Kenyan corporate giant with offices in seven countries, over twelve thousand employees and assets of over fifteen billion dollars.

Besides players, the arbitration team has four Kenyans, including IA Anthony Kionga, IA Duke Michieka, FA Frank Michuki and FA Christian NderiIsaac Babu will head the Appeals Committee.

2022 African Amateurs Individual Chess Championships 

Kenya hosted the 2022 edition of the event in Mombasa, and the team won two gold, one silver, and two bronze medals.

CM Aguda Lwanga won gold in the U1700 with seven points out of nine rounds, while Jully Mutisya won the gold in the Ladies U1700 with a perfect score of 9/9.

Madelta Glenda won the silver in the Ladies U200-U2300, cementing her position as one of East Africa’s top players.

Elizabeth CassidyWFM Sasha Mongeli, respectively, won bronze medals in the Ladies U1700 and U2000-2300 sections.
