Robert Mcligeyo features in 2024 World Junior Chess Championship
Robert Mcligeyo, the top junior player and highest-ranked player in Kenya, finished with a respectable 4.5 points out of 11 rounds at the recently concluded 2024 World Junior Chess Championship.
He becomes the fourth Kenyan to participate in this prestigious event.
The first Kenyan player to do so was 18-year-old Richard Polaczek in 1983 in Belfort, France. His impressive score of 6 points out of 13 rounds set a high standard for future Kenyan participants. Readers will recall that Richard Polaczek won the inaugural Kenya Open in 1979 when he was only 14. He currently resides in Belgium and is rated 2300.
Other participants include Khilan Shah (1993 in Calicut, India, with a score of 1 point out of 13 rounds) and Neal Ashok Shah (2002 Panaji, India, with zero points).
2024 World Chess Junior Champions
IM Kazybek Nogerbek from Kazakhstan clinched victory in the Open Section with 8.5 points out of 11 rounds. IM Divya Deshmukh from India dominated the Girls’ Section to win with an impressive score of 10 points out of 11 rounds.
The event ran from the 1st to 14th June 2024 at the Radisson GIFT City, in Gujarat, India.
The Open Section had 226 players, while 101 participated in the Girls’ Section.
