Gorilla Fart Tournament Reports: 66th NCC Championships Round 2
Report by – Mehul Gohil aka ‘Gorilla’
I have cocked up totally in the openings today.
Against Lenny Mataiga, I messed up my move order and the high-grade gazelle promptly unleashed a sac, and I was shell-shocked at my beginnerish play in the first six moves.
I lost castling rights, I lost a clean pawn, the central files were all open for Mataiga’s heavy pieces to start massaging me….it was shit. Really, it was a technically lost position.
All Mataiga had to do was come up with a simple development plan. Just secure the d pawn, slowly develop, centralise rooks and the Gorilla would have been cooked.
Instead, Mataiga played directly, trying to make the Gorilla resign within 20 moves. With my back to the wall I had to find a series of o!ly moves just to survive. Mataiga then exchanged a key knight and that allowed me to unleash a saving counterattack. Draw.
I just need decent positions out of the opening tomorrow.
Today, all I have done is defend like mad and get lucky.
He perhaps needs to learn some skills in planning. The position was not going to slip away. He did not need to hurry with the attack. He had to simply build his position.
As it was, he allowed me to complicate the position like crazy. When you are down, that is exactly what you want.
Mataiga should study ‘Fischer’s 60 Memorable Games‘. One thing about Fischer’s style, he first likes to mass his pieces before launching the attack. Exactly what Mataiga needed to do.
