2024 Zone 4.5 Chess Championship – IM Chumfwa triumphs
The 2024 Zone 4.5 Chess Championship has ended with IM Kelvin Chumfwa of Zambia clinching the gold medal with a score of seven points out of nine rounds. He went home with USD 1,000 as his cash prize.
IM Dante Beukes of Namibia was in a fierce battle for the silver, ultimately securing it with a score of 6.5 points. IM Stanley Chumfwa of Zambia also scored 6.5 points, but a lower tie-break placed him in the bronze position.
Christine Makwena of Zimbabwe won the Ladies Section with eight points. Her compatriot WCM Hazel Refiloe Mudodo won the silver with 6.5 points, while Naomi Mwale of Zambia took the bronze medal.
The event, held at the Urban Hotel in Lusaka, was a grand affair with a total of 31 players from four federations participating in the highly competitive Open Section.
The Ladies Section had 7 participants from three federations taking part.
The Project Chess Zambia Academy and the Chess Federation of Zambia co-hosted the event.
