Vladislav Artemiev Defends His Russian Champion’s Title.

Vladislav Artemiev is the 2024 Russian Chess Champion. He won the 77th Russian Championship, which concluded last week at the Shukshin Altai Regional Drama Theatre in Barnaul, a city within Altai Territory, Russia.  He scored 8.5 points out of the 11-round contest to retain the title that he won in 2023 as well. 

Kateryna Lagno, on the other hand, made history by scoring 7 points out of 11 rounds to claim the Women’s title in the 74th Russian Women’s Championship.  It was a truly historic moment for the charming Kateryna Lagno, marking her first win in the Russian Championship in her illustrious career.

Opening & Closing Ceremony

As is tradition, the Russian Chess Federation organised a grand opening and closing ceremony, complete with cultural performances and a display of sportsmanship.

Event Details

The Superfinals of the 77th Russian Championship and the 74th Russian Women’s Championship was held in Barnaul (Altai Territory) on 16-29 August, 2024.  The venue was the Shukshin Altai Regional Drama Theatre.

The prize fund for the event was RUB 7 million (USD 72,000) for the Open section & RUB 4 million (USD 40,000) for the Ladies section.

The open and women’s tournaments are 11-round all-play-all events.  The time control is 90 minutes for the first 40 moves plus 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move starting from move 1.

The Superfinals were organised by the Chess Federation of Russia with support of the Russian Ministry of Sport and Timchenko Foundation in cooperation with the Government of the Altai Territory and the Chess Federation of the Altai Territory.
