2024 African Junior Chess Championship
The 2024 African Junior Chess Championship, a nine-round event, kicked off in Cairo, Egypt, on 15th November and runs until 23rd November 2024.
The Open Section of the 2024 African Junior Chess Championship is a true representation of African chess, with a total of 30 participants from 13 diverse African federations. IM Hamed Wafa, the youngest sibling of the renowned Wafa family, is the top seed with a rating of 2384! He is seeking to retain the title that he won in 2023.
Kenya is represented by two promising young players, Christian Mugambi Mwamba and Bradley Wathimba, who are making their debut at the premier event at the continental level.
The Ladies Section has 14 players from six federations, with Deborah Quickpen of Nigeria as the top seed with a rating of 2044.
Our neighbour Uganda has four players in the event. Edwin Pido, Shoubhith Omprakash Kayyar and Nehemiah Nuwe are in the Open Section, while WFM Sana Omprakash Kayyar is playing in the Ladies Section.
