2024 Kenya National Championship Update
The 2024 Kenya National Championship continued on day 3, capturing some incredible and historic moments.
Defending Champion Joseph Methu found the going tough after conceding three draws in the first six rounds.
The 2022 Kenya National Champion Mehul Gohil found himself in unfamiliar territory when he was held to a draw against Allan Chumba in round four and lost to CM Aguda Lwanga in round five, surprising many.
Top seed and former Kenya National Champion CM Ben Magana was in complete control, showcasing his dominance with five points in the first five rounds. However, he faced a tough challenge in round six when he went down to Brian Gabriel Mwangi.
2018 Kenya National Champion Dr Victor Ng’ani cruised to three wins in the first three rounds before being defeated by CM Ben Magana in round five and Allan Chumba in round six.
Another former Kenya National Champion, Kenneth Omolo, suffered two losses to youngsters Allan Chumba in round three and to CM Aguda Lwanga in round six.
However, the standout performer of the first six rounds was CM Aguda Lwanga, who defeated two former national champions in successive rounds. His first victory was against 2022 champion Mehul Gohil in round five, followed by a win against Kenneth Omolo in round six.

Ladies Section
The Ladies Section was equally thrilling, with defending champion WFM Sasha Mongeli remaining undefeated in the first six rounds and ending with 5.5 points. She conceded a draw to 2018 National Champion Gloria Jumba in round two.
2022 national ladies champion WCM Joyce Nyaruai drew with 2019 national champion WCM Lucy Wanjiru, who is returning to competitive chess and then lost to defending champion WFM Sasha Mongeli in round five.
The nine-round event that started on 11th December will end on 15th December 2024. The event has attracted 180 participants in the Open Section and 72 in the Ladies Section, which the Makini School, along Makindi Road, is hosting
The top prize in the Open Section is a car, while for the Ladies Section, it is KES 100,000. The total cash prize fund is a staggering KES 519,000 (USD 4,000).
