IM Hamed Wafa crowned 2024 African Junior Champion
IM Hamed Wafa of Egypt & Chahrazed Djeroud of Algeria won their respective sections in the 2024 African Junior Chess Championship. The event ran from 16th to 23rd November 2024 in Giza, Egypt.
What is interesting about these two winners is that both of them are the defending champions in their respective categories.
IM Hamed Wafa won the event with a score of eight points out of nine rounds. His compatriot, FM George Samir David, took the silver with 6.5 points, while Luther Santos of Angola grabbed the bronze with 6.5 points as well but with a lower tie-break, which is determined by a set of rules to break a tie in a tournament.
It is interesting to point out that IM Hamed Wafa has two elder sisters, WGM Shrook Wafa & WGM Shaheeda Wafa, both of whom have previously won the African Junior Ladies Championship titles.
Kenyan youngsters Christian Mugambi and Bradley Wathimba found the going tough and ended with three points each. However, they gained considerable experience in this high-level event, learning from their opponents and honing their skills for future competitions.
Ugandan youngsters Edwin Pido and Shoubhith Omprakash Kayyar scored four and three points, respectively.
The event had 30 participants from 14 federations taking part.
Ladies Section
WCM Chahrazed Djerroud scored 6.5 points out of nine rounds to take the gold medal. WIM Joy Romany of Egypt took the silver medal while her compatriot ACM Dema Alaa took the bronze. All three ladies tied with 6.5 points each, with the medals being distributed on the tie-breaks.
It was a heartbreaking event for 2nd seed WFM Sana Omprakash Kayyar. She scored 5.5 points to end up in fourth place, missing the medal bracket by a whisker.
Top seed WCM Deborah Ebimobo-Ere Quickpen of Nigeria found the going difficult and finished in 5th place with five points out of the nine rounds.
This section saw 14 participants.
