2025 SOM Open Easter Chess Championship

Last weekend, the 2025 SOM Open Easter Chess Championship concluded at the Sports Outreach Ministry (SOM) Academy in Katwe, Uganda.  The four-day event attracted an impressive turnout of 110 players from Kenya, South Sudan, the USA and the hosts Uganda.

FM Haruna Nsubuga won the Open Section with 6.5 points from 8 rounds.

Martin Njoroge, the 2022 Kenya National Champion, bounced back to his winning ways to score 6.5 points as well and tie with FM Nsubuga.  However, Martin had to settle for the silver medal as he had an inferior tie-break and went home with UGX 750,000 (approximately KES 25,000).

The Open Section saw 80 contestants battling it out for top honours.

WCM Joyce Nyaruai of Kenya stunned her Ugandan hosts by winning the Lady’s Section with seven points out of eight rounds.  Her only loss was to WCM Milly Takali in round six.

Juliet Asaba grabbed the silver with six points.  WFM Gloria Nansubuga took the bronze medal with six points but with a lower tie-break.  A total of 29 ladies took part.
