2025 African Schools Individual Chess Championship
The 2025 African Schools Individual Chess Championship, which concluded on May 28th, 2025, saw Kenya secure nine gold medals, seven silver medals, and six bronze medals.Β The haul of 22 medals out of 36 on offer makes this one of Kenya’s finest performances in this premier African event.
The event took place from May 22nd to 29th, 2025, at the Pride Inn Hotel in the beach city of Mombasa.
A total of just over 1,100 players from eleven federations participated.Β Kenya fielded a massive 997 players in the event, underlying the massive support chess enjoys from parents and supporters.
The story of Margret Bwalya of Zambia, the winner of the silver medal in the U15 Girls Section, was one of the most heartwarming stories of the event.Β She travelled by bus, crossing the borders of Zambia, Tanzania, and Kenya, to carry her nation’s hope.Β Her journey spanned a total of over 40 hours, making it just in time for the event’s start.
