2025 Kenya National Youth & Cadet Chess Championship

The 2025 Kenya National Youth & Cadet Chess Championship ended this week with just over 3,600 players from all over the country taking part.   The five-day, eight-round event at the Kitale National Polytechnic in Kitale town saw some dramatic action on the board with several talented kids taking part.

The players taking part in the Final event are all qualified from the several regional events hosted earlier. The qualifying mark was still two points out of six rounds, which is on the low side.

The Finals in Kitale ran from August 1st to 5th, 2025.

The top eleven players from the Finals would then play in a 4-day, ten-round robin event which ran from August 6th to 9th, 2025, to select the winners for the respective age categories.

At stake were the national titles and the chance to represent Kenya in the following competitions,

    1. Africa Youth Chess Championship – Zimbabwe
    2. World Cadets Championship – Kazakhstan
    3. World Youth Chess Championship – Albania

The vast number of players and parents converging in the small town of Kitale generated great enthusiasm amongst the residents. The attached video clip from TikTok brought a smile to many chess players!  Check it out if you want to cheer up!
