The 2025 Kenya National Junior Chess Championship came to a close yesterday at Clarion Hotel, with Kuka Kyle winning the Boys Section and Elizabeth Cassidy Maina winning the Girls Section, each with 5.5 points out of 6 rounds.
The event saw 40 boys and 22 girls representing the best junior players from across the country vying for honours and a chance to secure a spot in the Kenya National Chess Championship, scheduled for December 2025. The event consisted of a six-round format with a 90-minute time control.
Davidson Waweru from Moi Nyeri Complex School was second in the Boys Section with 5.5 points, but with a lower tie-break.
Defending Boys Champion Hawi Kaloki scored 4.5 points to grab the bronze medal.
In the Girls Section, the defending Champion, Zuri Kaloki, won silver with five points, while Bella Nashipae grabbed the bronze with 4.5 points.

Despite the event not ordinarily carrying cash awards, the Chess Kenya President, Benard Wanjala, gave special tokens of KES 10,000 to the winners, KES 5,000 to the runners-up, and KES 3,000 to the 2nd runners-up in each section as a gesture of encouragement and recognition.
According to Team Kenya National Selection rules, both champions, Kuka Kyle and Elizabeth Cassidy, have earned invited slots to the 2025 Kenya National Chess Championship which is set for December 2025.
